Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstruation. The diagnosis is made retrospectively after menstruation is absent for 12 months. Most women enter menopause between the ages of 49 and 52 years.

Achieving postmenopause is a milestone that like all of life comes with its positive and negative effects. On one hand, you don’t have to worry about dealing with “that time of the month” again. No cramps, backache, headache, or mood swings that come with your menstrual cycle.

On the other hand, postmenopause may bring new health issues. Some are part of the typical aging process. Others are unique to the decrease in your body’s natural production of estrogen.

Many symptoms are found related to postmenopausal syndrome: Hot flushes, irritability, mood swings, insomnia, dry vagina, difficulty concentrating, mental confusion, stress incontinence, urge incontinence, osteoporotic symptoms, depression, headache, vasomotor symptoms, insomnia etc.

Estrogen is essential for maintaining health throughout a woman’s body  not just the reproductive system. With a decrease in estrogen, your body’s major systems like cardiovascular system, skeletol system, excretary system can be affected. So it’s important to pay attention to when menopause begins.

In Ayurveda, the menopausal syndrome is known as “Rajonivrutti”, which literally means “the end of Artava Pravrutti” i.e. the stopping of menstruation. Rajonivrutti is characterized by an aggravation of the Vata Dosha, thereby leading to an imbalance in the three doshas.
