At Ayurmelbourne, we provide Ayurveda Treatment for various health conditions and issues. Below are some of the more common treatments provided.
Rheumatological disorders (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function of the joints. In an autoimmune disease, your immune system starts attacking your own healthy tissues. In RA, the immune system targets the lining of the joints, causing inflammation and joint damage. RA usually affects smaller joints, such as the joints in the hands and feet, with the same joints typically involved on both sides of the body. However larger joints such as the hips and knees can also be affected. The disease may also affect other parts of the body.
The causes of RA are unknown. There is usually a throbbing and aching sort of pain. Pain and stiffness are usually worse in the mornings and after you have been sitting still for a while. Pain and stiffness hamper your day to day life and tasks that require joints to move.
When you have RA, antibodies attack the synovium, a membrane (thin layer of cells) that covers each of your joints. The synovium becomes inflamed, which causes chemicals to be released and synovium to thicken. The lining of the affected joint becomes inflamed, causing the joints to swell, become hot, tender to touch and painful. These chemicals can also damage bones, cartilage (the stretchy connective tissue between bones), tendons and ligaments. The chemicals gradually cause the joint to lose its shape and alignment.
According to Ayurveda rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata) is due to imbalance of vata dosha. Intake of vata and kapha-aggravating foods lead to the impairment of digestive fire which forms ama (toxin) in body. These toxins accumulate in joints leading to rheumatoid arthritis.
Ayurvedic treatment can include supplements, dietary changes, massage, and exercise. According to Ayurveda, herbs pacifying vata dosha along with kapha dosha and herbs eliminating the toxins (Ama) from body can help. Use of herbs helps to improve the digestive fire thus prevent the formation of ama (toxins) in body. Abhyangam (massage), swedana (hot fomentation) can help to reduce stiffness, swelling and pain. Panchkarma (virechana and vasti) can help as well.
Diabetes care
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood are too high. The amount of sugar in the blood is usually controlled by a hormone called 'insulin', which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin opens the doors (the glucose channels) that let glucose move from the blood into the body cells.
The body uses glucose as its main source of energy. When food is digested and enters your bloodstream, insulin moves glucose out of the blood and into cells, where it is broken down to produce energy. Excess glucose is also stored in body.
If you have diabetes, your body cannot break down glucose into energy. This is because there is either not enough insulin to move glucose or there is no insulin.
In Ayurvedic science, Diabetes was mentioned more than 3000 years ago by Charaka as “Prameha” in charak samhita. Diabetes is referred as Prameha or Madhumeha which means frequent urination and presence of sugar in urine. Diabetes is a metabolic kapha type of disorder in which there is diminished functioning of Agni. Ayurveda recognizes 24 forms of the disease.
Rather than simply putting a band-aid on the problem by using prescription medications, Ayurveda tackles the root causes of disease, which are often found in imbalances in a patient’s diet and lifestyle. After understanding how a patient is imbalanced, individualised foods, herbal medicines, spices, treatment, and exercises are combined to bring the body back into a state of balanced health. Diet, exercise, and herbal medicines help to balance kapha. Since many diabetic patients have autoantibodies, a cleansing program (Detox) is suggested. Ayurveda primarily focus on diet (pathya -apatya means what to eat and what to avoid) and lifestyle of patient as these are main causes of disease. Exercise is also a key treatment in which different yoga poses and pranayama are described to control sugar levels traditionally.
Renal stones
Kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. Kidney stones are solid crystals formed from the salts in urine. Kidney stones can block the flow of urine and cause infection, kidney damage or even kidney failure. Most kidney stones can be treated without surgery. Small stones in the kidney do not usually cause problems, they pass by themselves or need some treatment. While passing through the urinary track they cause gripping pain. Also lead to infection and blood in urine. If a stone does not pass and blocks urine flow or causes bleeding or an infection, then it may need to be removed with the help of surgery.
In Ayurveda renal stones are described as “Ashmari”. This condition is caused due to an imbalance or aggravation of three doshas known as Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These dosha are imbalanced due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle.
Treatment of renal stones includes a range of therapies that include herbal medicine, diet, and lifestyle changes. Also, in Ayurveda several diuretic herbs are indicated that help break the stones, so they are easily expelled in the urine. After surgery, or if you have repeated renal stones, ayurvedic herbs and remedies can avoid the chances of recurrence.
Migraine, Vertigo & Headache
A migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by recurrent headaches that are moderate to severe. Typically, the headaches are throbbing, affect one half of the head, are pulsating in nature, and last from a few hours to 3 days. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or smell.
According to Ayurveda in Migraine all tridosha are imbalanced. Among Tridosha, Vata and Pitta are predominant factors. Vata controls the nervous system and the activities of the brain. An imbalance in Vata triggers the disease so here we can consider all the Vata aggravating diet and lifestyle like lack of sleep, stress, extreme cool condition, irregular food habits, etc. Pitta is also considered one of the causes of migraine so Pitta aggravating diet like spicy food, junk food, beverages, stress are also important causes of migraine.
Along with herbal medicine diet, detox and lifestyle modification plays the important role. A healthy diet to manage migraine headache includes fruits, vegetables, vegetable soup, cooked rice, less oil, and buttermilk. Yoga and meditation are extremely useful in pain, stress management and sleep disorders. Usually, anuloma viloma pranayama is the best choice for migraine treatment. Ayurveda offers some effective therapies to relieve Migraine headache like Virechana, Nasya, Shirodhara, Shirolepa, Shirovasti.
Musculoskeletal Disorders (Spine and Joint related conditions like Osteoarthritis, Sciatica, Spondylosis, Rheumatoid arthritis)
Musculoskeletal issues arise from problems within your muscle and bone structure, including your joints, bones, tendons, and nerves. Musculoskeletal disorders include typical ailments like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Cervical Spondylosis, Osteoarthritis and Lower back pain. Persistent pain may be the result of musculoskeletal conditions. These are explained in Ayurveda under Vataroga. Vata is highly imbalanced among tridosha. Vata aggravating diet and lifestyle leads to these disorders.
Ayurveda, with its rich tradition and remedies may provide a solution for such ailments.
The treatment of Arthritis, Joint pain, Spinal and musculoskeletal disorders can be initiated only after understanding the ailment in detail and after a thorough examination of the patient treatment is decided which is a combination of therapies, lifestyle changes, diet and exercise (Yoga).
In general, vata balancing treatment can be implemented as per the type of the pain being dealt and joint or muscle being affected.
Fasting and other forms of treatment which bring lightness in the body, Enhancing the digestive fire or improving the metabolism, Digesting the endotoxins (Ama), Panchakarma, Januvasti and kativasti for local pain, pindaswda, abhyangam, valuka swedanam, nadisweda.
Gastrointestinal disorders (IBS, Constipation,Ulcerative colitis, Chrons disease)
Functional disorders are those in which the gastrointestinal (GI) tract looks normal but does not work properly. They are the most common problems affecting the GI tract (including the colon and rectum). Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD) and colitis are common examples. Symptoms of GI disorders often include cramping, abdominal pain, inflammation of the lining of the large and/or small intestine, chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and weight loss.
Many factors may upset the GI tract and its motility including unhealthy diet and lifestyle, stress, resisting the urge to have bowel movements due to pain from haemorrhoids, Overusing laxatives that over time weaken the bowel muscles.
Many of these can be prevented or minimized by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, practicing good bowel habits, and submitting to cancer screening.
Food is our only source of energy and without it human cannot survive. Therefore, it is especially important to have a healthy digestive system in place. A healthy and functional digestive system can ensure good health as per Ayurveda. Ayurveda upholds the essential link between metabolism and digestion. According to it 'Jatharagni' an essential digestive fire plays significant role in digestion and assimilation by way of its direct participation in catabolism which serves to break down food particles to bring about digestion. Hence, it is crucial to keep the digestive system healthy and to come up with the necessary changes in our dietary habits.
Ayurveda considers almost all the digestive disorders are due to improper digestive habits and unhealthy lifestyle of the patient. These days, there are lots of foods that are being prepared found to be processed and contain additives, which are not good for digestion or health. Eventually consumption of such diet leads to indigestion. One important cause for all types of Gastrointestinal disorders is indigestion. The digestive tract as believed by ancient science is to be responsibly managed and problems if any arises are to be addressed right at the early stage.
Ayurveda helps in Digestive disorders in various facets. Dinacharya (Daily Routine), Rutucharya (Preparing body for seasonal change), Ahar (Diet) plays crucial role to keep Digestive track healthy. Proper management in the initial stages helps vitiate digestion issues. Ayurveda influentially recommends the use of oral herbal medication as remedial measures for digestive ailments. Also, elimination of all harmful and negative toxins and ama from body by cleansing of the internal system (Panchakarma) and Ayurveda therapies are suggested based on the needs of illness.
Piles / Haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids are one of the most common causes of rectal bleeding. Haemorrhoids are clumps of dilated (enlarged) blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum. Haemorrhoids are also called piles. Haemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal haemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external haemorrhoids). Sometimes haemorrhoids swell when the veins enlarge and their walls become stretched, thin, and irritated while passing stool. Haemorrhoids are often caused by years of chronic constipation. There is itching or irritation in anal region, pain, or discomfort, swelling around anus, bleeding while passing motion. It is important to know for sure you have haemorrhoids, so do seek a diagnosis with your medical doctor to rule out other problems.
Fortunately, effective options are available to treat haemorrhoids. Many people get relief with home treatments and diet lifestyle changes. Some people may need treatment. Both treating and preventing haemorrhoids rely on eliminating constipation. A diet high in vegetables, fruits, cereals, and water will help produce soft bowel motions that are passed easily and regularly.
People experiencing haemorrhoids who want to try treating them with Ayurvedic medicine should expect herbal remedies, lifestyle changes as part of their treatment plan.
Most minor haemorrhoids can be treated with medication only. No other procedures are needed unless haemorrhoids are more severe. In worse cases, medications may be used in addition to procedures.
Your dosha will factor into the medicinal remedies your Ayurvedic practitioner chooses and any dietary or lifestyle changes they recommend you make to prevent recurrence. Some medications may not be suitable for your dosha, so follow your practitioner’s guidance.
Ayurvedic medicine for piles is a great solution to haemorrhoids. There are specific herbs your practitioner may use to help manage or treat your haemorrhoids and the type they use will depend largely on what kind of haemorrhoids you have.
Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever), Sinusitis
Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)
Allergic Rhinitis commonly known as Hay Fever is an allergic reaction when the nose and/or eyes comes into contact with environmental allergens, such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal dander. This causes an immune response in the lining of the nose where the nasal passages become red, swollen, and sensitive. Some people may experience hay fever at certain times of the year, for example spring or summer, and other people experience these symptoms all year round. People having such sensitivity may show symptoms like runny nose, itching in eyes and nose, watery eyes, sneezing, congestion.
If the allergen causing the allergic rhinitis is confirmed, minimising exposure to the allergen may reduce symptoms.
Although medications do not cure allergies, they are effective and have few side effects. It is important to use them correctly.
According to Ayurveda, allergic rhinitis stems from a few factors such as aggravation of Vata, Pitta or Kapha, a weakened immune system, and digestive problems.
Ayurvedic management is aimed to treat the root cause rather than treatment the surface symptoms. The management principle for chronic allergic rhinitis is that we must manage the disturbed digestive fire and balance the aggravated Kapha, improving the immunity of the patient. The combination of Ayurvedic herbs, diet, and therapies is aimed at nourishing and support to the lungs and respiratory system.
Ayurvedic treatment of hay fever includes detox treatment to cleanse the sinuses and respiratory channels like Nasya. Making few diet changes like avoiding vata kapha aggravating food such as meat, fermented, processed, heavy food, cold food etc.
Improving one’s lifestyle is another important part of treating Ayurveda for allergic rhinitis like stem inhalation, warm water shower, good sleep, covering nose in dusty and polluted surrounding, everyday Yoga and Pranayama to improve respiratory track immunity.
Sinusitis
The sinuses are hollow cavities in the skull, allocated between and behind the eyes, in the forehead, and cheeks. They are connected to the nose through tiny tubes. Inflammation to these sinuses is called as “Sinusitis”.
It may be a short-term, acute inflammation caused by bacterial infection such as the common cold. However, sinusitis can sometimes be a long term, chronic condition, complicated by allergies and/or structural problems in the nose, which can affect quality of life.
Blocked sinuses can be due to untreated allergy, colds, or polyps (growths on the sinus linings) and often cause pain in the face. Blocked sinuses also create an environment that favours the overgrowth of bacteria.
How is allergy a risk factor for developing sinusitis?
Allergy can cause chronic inflammation of the sinus and mucus linings. This inflammation prevents the usual clearance of bacteria from the sinus cavity, increasing the chances of developing secondary bacterial sinusitis.
Around half of all sinus infections will resolve without antibiotics and surgery. In people with frequent infections it is important to treat the underlying problems, such as allergy, and to treat symptoms quickly to prevent the need for antibiotics. Stem inhalations, saltwater irrigation of nose maybe helpful.
In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated to Dushta Pratishyaya and Peenasa, where the main dosha affected is Kapha. It gets aggravated and vitiates the Prana Vata (a sub type of Vata), which is mainly present in the respiratory tract.
The Ayurvedic approach to sinusitis treatment is multifaceted and can involve a combination detoxification processes through Panchakarma, oral medicines, dietary and lifestyle modifications which will help in correcting Agni, balancing kapha and vata, strengthening the immune system.
Therapies like Nasyam, Lepanam, Abhyangam, Vamanam, Shirodhara are commonly practiced depending on the dosha predominance and severity.
Nasya Karma or Nasyam is a unique and one of the five detoxification therapies mentioned in Ayurveda, extraordinarily successful in treating Sinusitis.
Asthma
Asthma is a medical condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. At other times their breathing is normal.
Asthma symptoms can be triggered by different things for different people. Common triggers include exercise, cigarette smoke, colds and flu, and allergens in the air (e.g. grass pollen).
Some people may have specific conditions which triggers the Asthma, like Exercise-induced asthma (which may be worse when the air is cold and dry), Occupational asthma (triggered by workplace irritants such as chemical fumes, gases or dust), Allergy-induced asthma (triggered by airborne substances, such as pollen)
Asthma cannot be cured, but its symptoms can be controlled. Most people with asthma can stay active and have a healthy life.
Asthma and Hay fever:
Asthma and hay fever both involve airway inflammation and sensitivity throughout the respiratory system. This means it is important to treat the nose as well as the lungs to achieve good asthma management. Though the reason that the presence of hay fever can make asthma more difficult to control is not entirely clear, blocked nose may bypass the nose humidifying function can cause dry air going in lungs which maybe the triggering factor for Asthma or nasal inflammation may trigger lower airway inflammation.
Research shows treating hay fever can reduce asthma-related emergency and hospitalisations and may help to improve your asthma symptoms. It is important to treat and manage both your asthma and hay fever well. If you have hay fever and asthma, treating your hay fever will help keep your asthma under control.
Asthma in Ayurveda is known as Tamaka Shwasa or Swasa Roga. Ayurveda clearly describes this condition as being multifactorial. It includes environmental and emotional factors as well. All cases of asthma involve an aggravation of both Vata and Kapha doshas. Ayurveda considers Asthma as a disease of gastro-intestinal origin. Ayurveda describes other causes which include stress, Chronic inflammation of different body systems, Impaired ability of the body to balance and heal itself, Instability in the nervous system as other causes of asthma, Over-active/Impaired immune system.
Asthma or swasa roga is highly variable in its course. Therefore, managing asthma with Ayurvedic remedies also needs a very individualized approach, depending on its possible causes. The general Ayurvedic approach and remedies for treating swasa roga or asthma are to first gain control of the disease as quickly possible with strong Vata and Kapha purification measures followed by appropriate herbal therapies. Different yoga poses and pranayama also help to boost respiratory system immunity, lung capacity and elasticity.
Skin conditions (Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne)
If you deal with eczema, psoriasis, acne, or other skin problems, you know how frustrating and debilitating these conditions can be and how difficult it can be to find solutions. They are chronic, nagging skin problems that do not go away. They can, however, be managed with excellent results. Medications and lifestyle changes can work together to get chronic skin problems under control.
Eczema
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a recurring, non-infectious, inflammatory skin condition. It affects one in three Australians at some stage throughout their lives.
The symptoms of eczema almost always involve itching. Sometimes the itching will start before the rash appears, but when it does, the rash most commonly appears on the face, back of the knees, wrists, hands, or feet. It may also affect other areas as well. Affected areas usually appear very dry, thickened, or scaly. The condition can also flare and subside for no apparent reason. Eczema can vary in severity and symptoms may flare up or subside from day to day.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a noncontagious chronic skin disease that produces plaques of thickened, scaly skin which is result of excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells. It is an inflammatory skin condition.
Psoriasis usually starts as small, red bumps, which grow bigger and form silvery scales. The skin appears thick but may bleed easily if you pick or rub off the scales. Rashes may itch, and skin may become cracked and painful. The areas most affected are the scalp, elbows, and knees, but psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body. There is no cure for psoriasis, but it can be completely controlled with treatment.
Unfortunately, no one knows the exact cause of psoriasis. Some experts believe that it is a combination of things. Perhaps something went wrong with the immune system causing inflammation and triggering new skin cells to form too quickly. Normally, skin cells are replaced every 10 to 30 days. With psoriasis, new cells grow every 3 to 4 days. The build-up of old cells being replaced by new ones creates the silver scales.
Acne
Your skin has tiny holes called pores that can become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. If your skin is repeatedly affected by this condition, you may develop Acne.
Acne can be found almost anywhere on your body. It most commonly develops on your face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders. Acne most commonly starts during puberty between the ages of 10 and 13 and tends to be worse for people who have oily skin. Acne occurs in both sexes. During this time, your body undergoes hormonal changes. These changes can trigger oil production, leading to an increased risk of acne. Hormonal acne related to puberty usually subsides, or at least improves when you reach adulthood. There are certain factors which triggers the condition such as hormonal changes caused by puberty or pregnancy, certain medications, a diet high in refined sugars or carbohydrates, having parents who had acne.
There are many effective treatments for acne that reduce both the number of pimples you get and your chance of scarring. Effective treatments are available, but acne can be persistent. The pimples and bumps heal slowly, and when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up. Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems.
According to Ayurveda above skin conditions are related to the vitiation of any of the three doshas affecting the skin and blood as well as accumulated metabolic wastes. In general, the main dosha involved is pitta or kapha, but all three can be involved. The excess Pitta inside the body manifests toxins on the skin which result in the itchy flare-ups associated with eczema and psoriasis.
Modern skin treatments mostly depend on external applications. They may help to reduce symptoms but sometimes when stopped using external applications the conditions may flare again. Whereas, Ayurvedic treatments are not mere ‘skin deep’, it goes to the roots of the problem and help to fix the systemic route cause of the conditions. In order to get a handle on your condition, it is necessary to take a holistic approach – approaching your condition from the perspective of diet, lifestyle, plant-based skincare, and your mental state. This is the whole premise of Ayurveda as holistic, mind-body medicine.
Ayurveda offers many traditional and custom formulations that are specific to the various forms of this condition, but these can only be selected once a full evaluation is made by an Ayurvedic practitioner.
Cleansing from within is also a major factor in removing these type of conditions, as accumulated toxins tend to surface on the skin. A progressively cleaner diet may be necessary to promote the healing process and allow proper digestion of food (to avoid further accumulating toxins in the body) along with the unique cleansing therapies Ayurveda has to offer, including Panchakarma for deep detoxification, and a stress management program that would include yoga and meditation to strengthen the body while calming your mind.
Panchakarma, the basic body purification method is used in the treatment of psoriasis. Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis goes through several stages e.g. lepanam (application of ointments), abhayangam (oil massage), snehapanam (taking medicated ghee), pizhichil (full body massage), shirovasti (keeping oil on head) and basti (enema). A psoriasis patient is also given a strict diet regime called pathyam.
Gynecological disorders (menorrhagia, oligomenorrea, PCOD, Painful menstruation, Menopause, endometriosis)
Gynecological disorders affect the internal and external organs in the female pelvic and abdominal areas. These disorders include dysmenorrhea (pain associated with menstruation), vulvodynia (unexplained chronic discomfort or pain of the vulva), and chronic pelvic pain (a persistent and severe pain occurring primarily in the lower abdomen for at least 6 months).
Some problems can affect the proper functioning of the reproductive system and may affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant. One example, polycystic ovary syndrome, occurs when immature follicles in the ovaries form together to create a large cyst, preventing mature eggs from being released. Another reproductive disorder, endometriosis, occurs when the type of tissue that lines the uterus grows elsewhere, such as on the ovaries or other abdominal organs. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the uterine cavity, within the wall of the uterus, or on the outside of the uterus.
Thyroid
Thyroid problems affect the thyroid, a gland in the neck that helps control many of the body’s most important functions. Thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone (T3 T4), which controls many activities in your body, including how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats. Diseases of the thyroid cause it to make either too much or too little of the hormone. Depending on how much or how little hormone your thyroid makes, you may often feel restless or tired, or you may lose or gain weight.
Women are more likely than men to have thyroid disease. One in eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime. In women, thyroid diseases can cause: Problems with menstrual period, Problems getting pregnant, Problems during pregnancy.
Thyroid disease can be broadly categorised as thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism) and structural disease (goitre, nodules and cancer).
- Hyperthyroidism - this is when your thyroid makes too much thyroid hormone. The most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism are weight loss, agitation and nervousness, heat intolerance, rapid heartbeat and becoming tired doing ordinary activities.
- Hypothyroidism - this is when your thyroid does not make enough thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism can go on for years without showing any signs. When symptoms do appear, they can be quite varied and can include fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, thinning hair, poor memory, and depression.
- Thyroiditis - this is inflammation of the thyroid. It happens when the body's immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid.
Once diagnosed, however, thyroid problems can usually be treated effectively.
According to Ayurveda the thyroid function is controlled by Pitta dosha. Pitta is responsible for all the metabolic actions carried out by the thyroid gland.
Hypothyroidism is considered as a Kapha-Vata dominant Dosha imbalance in the body with a diminished agni leading to irrational transformations including Atistoulya (Obesity).
Hyperthyroidism is considered as a Pitta -Vata dominant Dosha imbalance in the body with Unstable agni leading to Dhatukshaya such as emaciation, Increased heart rate, Weight loss.
Ayurveda emphasizes on the prevention in early stage is so vital to avoid the further complications in the disease prognosis
The treatment modality for Hypothyroidism includes Kapha Vatahara and Atisthoulya Chikitsa like Rookshopachara, Swedanam, Virechanam and Vasti for strengthening Agni.
Hyperthyroidism treatment focus on stabilizing the Agni depending on presenting complaints with treatments such as Snehapanam, Swedanam, Virechanam and Vasti.
These treatments are carried out considering the Prakriti, Dosha- Dhatu- Mala status and the risk factors of the individual. Nasya, shirolepa, shirodhara, abhyangam are also helpful with different Ayurveda herbs. Other than Ayurveda therapies and Ayurveda herbs some yoga asana, suryanamskara, head-neck exercises, yoga mudra and pranayama also help.
Infertility Councelling
New life begins when an egg from a woman is fertilised by sperm from a man. Ovulation occurs around 14 days before the start of the menstrual period, when an egg (ovum) is released from one of the ovaries.
The egg is swept into the nearby fallopian tube and ushered towards the uterus (womb). If the egg is fertilised on its journey, it lodges in the womb lining (endometrium). Pregnancy then begins.
The odds of a young fertile couple conceiving by having sexual intercourse around the time of ovulation are approximately one in five every month. A couple isn’t considered to have fertility problems until they have tried and failed to conceive for one year.
Approximately 15 per cent of couples experience fertility difficulties. In most cases, the couple can be helped with assisted reproductive technologies.
Around 30 per cent of fertility problems in couples originate in the woman. Another 30 per cent originate in the man and 30 per cent is found in both partners. No cause is found in around one in 10 couples investigated for infertility. This is called ‘unexplained’ or ‘idiopathic’ infertility.
Because people have children later in life than they used to, age-related infertility affects an increasing number of women and men.
Stress management/Mental health
Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you sense danger—whether it’s real or imagined—the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction or the “stress response.”
The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life—giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid a car accident.
Stress can also help you rise to meet challenges. It’s what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you’d rather be watching TV. But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, mood, productivity, relationships, and your quality of life.
If you frequently find yourself feeling frazzled and overwhelmed, it’s time to take action to bring your nervous system back into balance. You can protect yourself—and improve how you think and feel—by learning how to recognize the signs and symptoms of chronic stress and taking steps to reduce its harmful effects.
Sleep disorders
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life.
How much sleep is enough varies from person to person, but most adults need seven to eight hours a night.
At some point, many adults experience short-term (acute) insomnia, which lasts for days or weeks. It's usually the result of stress or a traumatic event. But some people have long-term (chronic) insomnia that lasts for a month or more. Insomnia may be the primary problem, or it may be associated with other medical conditions or medications.
You don't have to put up with sleepless nights. Simple changes in your daily habits can often help.
Fibromylgia
Fibromyalgia is a long-term (chronic) condition.
It causes:
- pain in the muscles and bones (musculoskeletal pain)
- areas of tenderness
- general fatigue
- sleep and cognitive disturbances
This condition can be hard to understand, even for healthcare providers. Its symptoms mimic those of other conditions, and there aren’t any real tests to confirm the diagnosis. As a result, fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed.
In the past, some healthcare providers even questioned whether fibromyalgia was real. Today, it is much better understood. Some of the stigma that used to surround it has eased.
Fibromyalgia can still be challenging to treat. But medications, therapy, and lifestyle changes can help you to manage your symptoms and to improve your quality of life.
Obesity
Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A crude population measure of obesity is the body mass index (BMI), a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height (in metres). A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese. A person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight.
Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Once considered a problem only in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings.
